At this point on the globe where the Irminger, Norwegian and Greenland Seas meet the Denmark Strait…
… between the North Atlantic and the Arctic winds a quirk in the relief of our good old earthly crust, known as the 'Mid-Atlantic Ridge'. These names may stir up in you, all jumbled together: tales grown legendary of sagas, of scientific expeditions with more or less tragic outcomes, of harsh cod-fishing campaigns or of pristine pack ice now living on borrowed time. All of this is of course true, but these precise places are above all the stage of a mighty underground battle. There, two gigantic chunks of continents are on the move: the 'American' and 'Eurasian' tectonic plates. Bound to drift inexorably apart from one another by immeasurable forces, they give rise to monumental geological phenomena. It is here, then, that out of the ground's frenzied activity a land of 103,000 km² was born. Now an island nation, its relief is as remarkable as its inner activity is seething. At this point lies an island of tumultuous origins, then.

The country's third-largest natural body of water, the lake was born of the whims of the Krafla volcano, located right beside it. The entire area is therefore neither more nor less than a vast volcanic system, still extremely active, whose manifestations are found throughout the region in ways as varied as they are impressive. Pungent solfataras, gas or steam fumaroles, pools of scalding mud, hot springs, mofettes, turquoise-blue maars and other sublimates are all so many fascinating paravolcanic phenomena, bearing witness to the power that slumbers at the heart of Icelandic soil.
